Former NBA player and author Paul Shirley posted on his blog FlipCollective Tuesday (Jan. 26) about Haiti and he was fired.
What he said was:
"I haven't donated to the Haitian relief effort for the same reason that I don't give money to homeless men on the street. Based on past experiences, I don't think the guy with the sign that reads "Need You're Help" is going to do anything constructive with the dollar I might give him. If I use history as my guide, I don't think the people of Haiti will do much with my money either."
and
"After the tsunami of 2004, the citizens of the world wailed and donated and volunteered for cleanup, rarely asking the important - and, I think, obvious - question: What were all those people doing there in the first place? Just as important: If they move back to a place near the ocean that had just been destroyed by a giant wave, shouldn't our instinct be to say, 'Go ahead if you want, but you're on your own now.'?"
So he gets fired for stating his opinion? Stupid. (we don't agree what he said because it was quite harsh) While he said his own opinion about donating money to Haiti, there are others out there who feel that way. What happened to free speech? People not allowed to express how they feel anymore? Everyone has to feel the same way?
like momsword.org donated money to Haiti and the only thing that bothered us was the telethon. While it was an excellent idea to do that and celebs (and other people) donated money but when our nation said that the jobs are bad and the economy is bad, did any celebs step up and say "hey, we are wealthy, let us donate money to the nation? or did wealthy people or celebs say "Let us donate money to Michigan, home of the auto industry because we need to keep it going!" No. They didn't.
In fact according to this website, In 2008, the most recent year for which we have figures, the United States donated 92 cents per American to Haiti. Granted, any year can fluctuate, so look at three-year totals. The United States contributed $2.32 per American to Haiti over the last three years for which we have data (about 80 cents a year). That’s much less than other countries do, even though Haiti is in our hemisphere and has historic close ties to the U.S. For example, Canada contributed $12.13 per person to Haiti over three years, and Norway sent $8.44.
So in reality, America was always donating money to Haiti, where did the money go? It was a large sum!
now we must say, that momsword.org donated a good amount of money to Haiti and even at the telethon. But we are expressing our feelings and opinions.
So with all that said, when will the United States of America's economy get fixed?
and we do pray for people in Haiti and wish for their best because the people there are very nice. We have a lot of friends from Haiti.
Should Paul have gotten fired for what he said? no. Should he says sorry? Yes.
