Somer Thomson --- we need to do something about protecting children !!!!

As a mother to a toddler, the story about Somer Thompson's body being found in a Georgia landfill on Thursday broke my heart. It is stories just like these that have been coming out in the past few years that makes me sick. Like in Florida I think it was, could have been Georgia, but some old dude kidnapped this young kid, buried her alive. He is finally dead but how could he do that to a child? how can anyone do this to a child?
We can pray for the family, which is something I will do. But this is not enough, we have to take action to protect our children.
Get this, Florida's sexual offenders and predators registry, which is updated daily, shows 88 registered offenders live in Orange Park, and 161 offenders live within a five-mile radius of her home.
Now when I chose a house, I looked for one that was not near any sex offender's and I make sure I am with my child 24/7. Where I live, I have seen parents who let your child run around the neighborhood, and these children are under 10 not being watched by any parent. Or when the parent is outside, they will gab away at some other parent not paying attention. It annoys me because my family always taught me to be aware of my surroundings.
I remember as kid, I was a safety guard girl in the 5th grade for the mornings. I remember crying to my grandma for her not to follow me to and from school since it was a 4 min. bike ride (prob. less than that), but she always told me it was for my safety to follow me because you never know what kind of crazies are out there. When she did follow me, she stayed not where I could see her. But then there were parents who let their child go to school without thinking that anything could happen. Why? Because we are naive.
The sad thing anything can happen when you least expect it, just look at 7 year old Somer Thompson? Look at the others who were murdered in the past. There is a lot we can do!
One thing is the 'helping hands' where parents in the neighborhood put hand cut-outs and write 'helping hands' and put it in the window. That is if a child gets lost or there is danger, the child can go to that door and that house can call that child's parents.
have a cold word. Mine was 'the rainbow tree', only code word that my family knew.
What we need to do is a national if not, an international effort to protect children. Such as getting rid of child porn! Oh yes that is on the internet and it is sick, all those type of sites should be taken down but sadly they are not .... for some sick reason.
We need to protect our children, we need to tell them right from wrong and don't let your child wander!!!! no matter how old they are, they should ALWAYS be with a parent, we are not in Kansas anymore!!! This isn't a safe world and we need to put an end to child kidnapping and murder!!!!
and whoever did this to this precious child, need to rot in hell!
"We live in Boise ID, and while not a hotspot for this type of activity, it is extremely concerning. We live in a reasonably nice neighborhood, however for my daughter to get to her junior high, she has to walk through some areas that are not so great, with known sex offenders and drug-related issues. The frustrating part is that the school bus stops "ON" our property, exactly 1 mile from the school, for another student at another school - this bus does stop at my daughter's school. Because the district criteria states the distance must be greater than 1.5 miles, she is not eligible to ride, and in fact was told not to ride unless her parents make arrangements to pay for the bus. The ironic thing is that the bus has perhaps 5-10 kids on it; certainly there are many seats left vacant. My daughter is not the only young female in the neighborhood that would like to ride the bus either. But RED TAPE rules! It is this type of bureaucratic nonsense that makes no sense, and endangers our children! So much for public safety being priority #1. If the school district or the bus were truly worried about the children's welfare, this wouldn't be the case! This must change!!!!"

"Student Qualifications for Transportation: Safety Busing Zones. Title: SOMER THOMPSON
i'm a DAD. I'M just as saddened by this as ANY mother would be and/or is. I just wanted to add my input. NO disrespect, but I want you to know there are fathers who are nauseated by this act on that poor little girl.. thanks..
I can't tell you how frustrated I am with the way this country deals with sexual predators. It is very obvious to me that the sex offender registry does not do anything to protect our children. It seems as though every time we hear about a new case of child abduction, rape and/ or murder of these children the crime is being committed by a "registered sex offender". I understand that our prisons are full but we need to make a place somewhere for these people. It sounds crazy and midivil but I am seriously not opposed to maiming these despicable monsters in a way to make them recognizable to the general public, weather it be a tattoo on their fore head or cutting off their hands. Enough is enough.

Title: Absolutely agree
Registries of sexual offenders can help. They can be hard to keep up to date, though
I agree. Enough is enough! I know elementry schools have after school care so they can stay at school until a parent or guardian can pick them up or they can get them at the end of the school day. It should not be allowed to let the walk home alone. Those days are over people. WAKE UP!!!
Please let me know what can be done to stop this madness. It is everyone's job to protect our children and their innocence so that they don't become an endangered species. People that abuse, rape or kill a child are sick and need to be locked up for life without parole or punished to the maximum extent of the law. There should be ZERO tolance towards a crime commited against a child.
